About

Just me talking about science!

Hey! I’m Soph! A twenty-something PhD student currently living in Southampton, UK. I am studying embryonic stem cell metabolism here at the University of Southampton – specifically, I am looking into ways that stem cells can become more pluripotent, or ways of keeping them as stem cells for longer, with the future aim of having better stem cells to make heart cells or liver cells or skin cells for example out of for use in future medicine!

Even though I am a proud scientist, I’ve always liked the idea of being a writer in some context – so my goal for this blog is for it to be a creative outlet for me and try my hand at writing about the PhD experience, about stem cell news and a handful of other features I am excited to try out. I’m also really passionate about teaching and inspiring people to get involved in science or at least understand a bit more about what they read in the media so you the public can make informed opinions of your own. I think that scientists often neglect the importance of engaging with the public and communicating their research clearly and concisely, so I would LOVE this blog to showcase science, scientists and to spread public awareness on stem cell research!

.

I also want to show that scientists are not just old men in white lab coats sat at lab benches all day! I want to break that stereotype and show that scientists are normal, fun AND cool people! So, me, for example – outside the lab, I love sport! I love playing, watching, reading about – ANYTHING! My favourites are probably hockey and cricket as they are the ones I play, but you will often find me watching football or rugby of a weekend – but I’m also trying to broaden my horizons and understand American football. I love to watch movies and TV series, I have penpals all over the world that I love writing to and I’m a bit of a Potterhead! But the main thing I love to do outside of the lab is travel! I have a serious case of wanderlust and would visit new places every month if a PhD student budget would allow me! I love to blog about my travels too – so check out the Soph talks travel! tab in the menu list!

.

That’s a bit about me! But hopefully you will share this science blog journey with me!

.

If you’re interested in being featured in my blog, want to collaborate, there’s a topic you want me to tackle or just want to discuss science, sporty or travel related things, please just get in contact with me!Β I would love to hear from you.
